Local order in a supercooled colloidal fluid observed by confocal microscopy

چکیده
The local order in a supercooled monodisperse colloidal fluid is studied by direct imaging of the particles with a laser scanning confocal microscope. The local structure is analysed with a bond order parameter method, which allows one to discern simple structures that are relevant in this system. As expected for samples that crystallize eventually, a large fraction of the particles are found to sit in surroundings with dominant face-centred cubic or hexagonally close-packed character. Evidence for local structures that contain fragments of icosahedra is found, and, moreover, the icosahedral character increases with volume fractionφ, which indicates that it might play an important role at volume fractions near the glass transition.

Three-dimensional direct imaging of structural relaxation near the colloidal glass transition
Confocal microscopy was used to directly observe three-dimensional dynamics of particles in colloidal supercooled fluids and colloidal glasses. The fastest particles moved cooperatively; connected clusters of these mobile particles could be identified; and the cluster size distribution, structure, and dynamics were investigated. The characteristic cluster size grew markedly in the supercooled f...
متن کاملLocal influence of boundary conditions on a confined supercooled colloidal liquid
We study confined colloidal suspensions as a model system which approximates the behavior of confined small molecule glassformers. Dense colloidal suspensions become glassier when confined between parallel glass plates. We use confocal microscopy to study the motion of confined colloidal particles. In particular, we examine the influence particles stuck to the glass plates have on nearby free p...
متن کاملDecoupling of rotational and translational diffusion in supercooled colloidal fluids.
We use confocal microscopy to directly observe 3D translational and rotational diffusion of tetrahedral clusters, which serve as tracers in colloidal supercooled fluids. We find that as the colloidal glass transition is approached, translational and rotational diffusion decouple from each other: Rotational diffusion remains inversely proportional to the growing viscosity whereas translational d...
متن کاملDynamics of particles and cages in an experimental 2D glass former
We investigate the dynamics of a glass-forming 2D colloidal mixture and show the existence of collective motions of the particles. We introduce a mean square displacement MSD with respect to the nearest neighbors which shows remarkable deviations from the usual MSD quantifying the individual motion of our particles. Combined with the analysis of the self-part of the Van Hove function this indic...
متن کاملStructurally determined Brownian dynamics in ordered colloidal suspensions: Self-diffusion in fluid, supercooled, and crystalline phases
Electrostatically interacting colloidal suspensions at medium to very low salt concentrations were prepared in differently ordered phases using the method of continuous deionization. Equilibrium phase states include fluid, monoand polycrystalline material as well as coexistence between fluid and monocrystal. A nonequilibrium supercooled fluid state is reproducibly reached by shear melting. In t...
